Your practice is a combination of obstetricians and doctors, tell us something about this dynamic.

We work together with 6 OBGY doctors and 4 certified Best Obstetrician in Lahore. That means that we treat all our patients together as a team. Patients get the best two worlds with this approach. Midwives are trained to manage prenatal care and work processes in a normal physiological way, while the training of doctors focuses on both normal and risky pregnancies. Doctors naturally also train for surgical emergencies and complications. By reporting both approaches in a private practice environment, the patient receives clinically appropriate care that gives priority to spontaneous vaginal delivery and a significant amount of individual personal one-on-one care, while always having a doctor available for any problems or emergencies.

What is an obstetrician and how are they trained?

Licensed midwives in the city of Lahore include certified midwives and certified nursing midwives. They each have a master’s degree or higher and are certified by the Midwifery Certification Board. Their education is more focused on well-being than on illness, and they recognize birth as a normal process. While midwives are being trained to use medical interventions, they only do so when necessary. Midwifery courses include the study of preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and newborn care, as well as gynecological care, primary care and family planning. In addition, midwives study sciences such as biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and embryology. Midwives also study pharmacology to prescribe contraception and other medications. To get a diploma, every midwife must also complete training in the clinical setting where they gain hands-on experience. Some midwives also have a nursing degree.

Can obstetricians and doctors work together in pregnancies with a higher risk or in only “normal” expected births?

Although many pregnancies are normal, some patients have at least one risk factor, whether it’s the age of the mother, previous medical issue or operation, or an acquired problem during pregnancy, such as anemia. Fortunately, most pregnancies come out very well with a healthy mother and baby. Midwives can and take care of most problems during pregnancy, but they can check in at one of our doctors to confirm a plan or to get more detailed clinical input. Because we are a collaborative practice, these quick consultations are simple and routine in our practice – it is usually just a walk through the corridor or a telephone conversation. There are a few rare patients who have risks that should only be treated by doctors, but this is the exception, not the rule.

What can a patient expect during her first antenatal visit to your office?

The first prenatal visit usually includes an ultrasound to confirm the dating and viability of the pregnancy, an overview of the patient’s medical, surgical and obstetric history, discussion of optional genetic screening tests and a physical examination. Questions are answered and advice is given about routine restrictions during pregnancy.

What can a patient expect in the delivery room with the midwife / doctor combination?

Midwives in our practice usually manage the  labor process. Much of this management determines the progression of the birth, and much of it is watchful waiting without intervention. However, if delivery does not proceed normally, the midwife will usually work within standard clinical practice to safely achieve a vaginal delivery. However, sometimes that is not possible and doctor management usually starts. Sometimes the end result is still a vaginal delivery, but at other times this means that the patient is undergoing caesarean section. Every clinical situation is different. Other times there is shared care for a normal process, sometimes with both the doctor and the midwife present for delivery. We love delivering babies, so sometimes both the midwife and the doctor are there to experience childbirth with the patient and her family!

What can a patient expect after the birth with the midwife / doctor combination?

It is typical of our practice that the calling midwife or doctor provides postpartum care to patients who are still in the hospital. However, as soon as the patient leaves the hospital, she will usually follow up with the provider who delivered her baby. However, we are flexible in this regard to meet the wishes and wishes of the patient (and the planning!).

Your practice is the only local practice for all women. How does that distinguish practice?

We are very happy to offer a fully female obstetric team to our patients. Many patients feel most at ease with a female caregiver, and given the way obstetric care is practiced today with a rotating group of calling providers rather than a single practitioner on 24/7, our practice ensures that no matter who baby from a patient, it will be from a female provider. This offers great comfort and less anxiety in many patients.

What does it mean to be an independent practice?

Women’s Care is the only private practice that offers Comprehensive Obstetric care in the Lahore. We make our own decisions about the practice and care of patients and we are not managed by another entity such as a hospital. This allows us to make decisions that are best for our patients and to provide the care that we consider appropriate. We love our patients and love being able to take care of them!
